Performance characteristics
All silicone surface additives are derived from polydimethylsiloxane. By varying the chain length a variety of products of different properties and characteristics can be obtained. Short-chain silicone additives have good compatibility in the coating system, showing typical properties of silicone such as reducing surface tension and improving leveling. With the increase of the degree of polymerization, the relative molecular mass and chain length increase, the compatibility with the system decreases, and the performance changes from leveling to defoaming and even hammering effect. Because the long chain molecules are not mixed, especially easy to cause shrinkage, short chain molecules relative molecular mass is small, especially easy to migrate caused by the trouble of recoating, so pure polydimethylsiloxane in modern coatings is almost no longer applicable.
Alkyl silicone oil is a polymethyl alkyl siloxane obtained by replacing part or all of the methyl groups in the structure of dimethyl silicone oil with long-chain alkyl groups. wherein R is an alkane group having more than 12 carbon atoms. Compared with the traditional dimethyl silicone oil, the introduction of alkyl groups increases the relative molecular mass and reduces the polarity, so that it maintains the general performance of organosiloxane while giving some defoaming properties, and it is easy to achieve leveling defoaming balance in some more sensitive systems. Compared with polydimethylsiloxane, this modification has higher surface tension and system compatibility, and has less influence on surface slip.
